Family Tree Magazine PLUS or VIP Questions

What is Family Tree Magazine Plus?
Family Tree Magazine Plus is a membership program that offers full website access to the complete article archives from Family Tree Magazine. Throughout our website, you will often see green plus signs to indicate that only members can read the full text of those articles. Of course, much of our website is still accessible by everyone who visits the site. And, we are constantly adding new resources to the Plus program, so as time goes on, Plus will be even more enriching. Members can purchase a monthly or annual membership.

What’s the difference between Family Tree Magazine Plus and Family Tree Magazine VIP?
Family Tree Magazine Plus is a service that lets you access our online archive of articles from all the back issues of Family Tree Magazine. It costs $39.99 per year, with monthly subscription options available. Note that a Plus membership does not include a subscription to the print Family Tree Magazine.

Family Tree Magazine VIP is a $49.99 package offering several benefits. One of these benefits is a year of membership in the Family Tree Magazine Plus service (see what else you receive as a VIP). So, being a member of Family Tree Magazine VIP also makes you a member of Family Tree Magazine Plus.

How do the annual back issue CDs differ from the Plus membership?
Our searchable back issue CDs are another way to access content from past Family Tree Magazine print issues. The primary differences between the CDs and the Family Tree Magazine Plus service are:
  1. Family Tree Magazine  Plus is accessed online; the CDs are used offline
  2. Family Tree Magazine  Plus is a monthly or annual membership; the CDs are a one-time purchase
  3. The CD content is static—it doesn’t change, whereas new content is being added regularly to Family Tree Magazine Plus. Plus also includes special issue content the CDs do not.
  4. The CDs replicate the look of the articles as they appeared in print, and the presentation as intact issues just as they were originally published. Family Tree Magazine Plus presents the information in HTML format just like any other web page, and the content is grouped by topic on the website. So you would find all our articles on online genealogy grouped together when you browse the website, rather than accessing articles by issue date.

  •  To change your mailing or e-mail address, click Edit Profile Information.

  •  To change your password, click the Change Password Link at the top of the page. You’ll need to enter your current password. If you don’t remember it, log out by clicking the Logout button at the top right of FamilyTreeMagazine.com, then take the steps described in the above question.

(Accounts that don’t auto-renew won’t have this button.)
Where do I find the Family Tree Magazine Plus articles I’m supposed to receive access to?
To find the Family Tree Magazine Plus articles, go to FamilyTreeMagazine.com. Content accessible only to Plus members is marked with a green plus sign icon like this: . If you’re not logged in, click the blue Login button in the upper right corner and enter your username and password. When logged in, you will be able to view the full text of all articles.

How do I search for the Plus articles that will be most helpful for my research?
There are two ways to find Plus articles of interest to you:
  • First, you can click any of the navigation buttons in the orange bar, or the blue “rollover” links that pop up below the orange bar, to see lists of articles in those categories.

  • Second, you can search for articles using the search box in the upper right of every page of FamilyTreeMagazine.com. Just type your keywords, such as immigration records or Louisiana into the box (you can use quotation marks to enclose phrases) and click Search. On your results page, you can use the Sort By dropdown menu to sort your results by search relevance, date posted (newest to oldest), or Plus/Free.
Note that the bulk of our Plus articles were posted to the website when we launched Family Tree Magazine Plus in late 2009, so sorting by “date” may not be very useful in helping you find an article from a specific issue. Plus articles end with the magazine issue in which they originally appeared, so try searching for a keyword and the cover date of the issue, for example: census “February 2002.”

Some of the links in the articles don’t work.
Web sites frequently change URLs or go offline altogether. The links and information in the Plus articles were current as of the issue’s publication—which may be as long ago as our first issue in January 2000. (The original publication date is at the end of each Plus article.) You can report a broken link to by e-mailing our editors; please be sure to include the URL of the page where you found the broken link.

If a website still exists but has changed addresses, you can find it by running a Google search on the name of the site. If the site is in the same place but its pages have new URLs, go to the site’s home page and look for a site map or search box to help you find the information you need.

So do I need to pay in order to use anything on FamilyTreeMagazine.com?
No. The free FamilyTreeMagazine.com articles and resources that existed before we launched the Plus membership are still freely available, and we continue to add new free articles to the website.

We’ve put our print Family Tree Magazine article archive online in order to give those wishing to access content from back issues an easy, searchable way to do so. Other options for getting back issues are to buy them in print, as digital downloads, or on our annual CDs.

To find the free articles, you can click the category links on the home page, or search the site using the search box in the upper right. In your results list, free and Plus articles are grouped (you can separate them using the Sort By drop-down menu; Plus articles will be listed first). Plus articles are indicated by a green Plus icon. If you’re not a Plus member or you’re not logged in, you’ll be able to read the first few sentences of these Plus articles.

I’m having technical problems (for example, my Plus login doesn’t work, or I’m logged in but I get an error message when I try to access an article). How can I get help?
Contact our ShopFamilyTree.com customer service department. Please include your name, e-mail address, phone number, a description of the problem, and any error messages you received. For help by phone, please call (855) 840-5122 between 8 am and 5 pm CT.
