I started writing this column for Family Tree Magazine four years ago, and in that time, have received hundreds of e-mails from readers about the many topics I've covered. But now, the time has come to close out my AncestorNews column.
As I've thought about the dozens and dozens of topics I've written about, a few stand out as my favorites—and yours too, based on the number of e-mails I received after the columns were posted. As I write this last column, I'd like to revisit a few that stand out in my memory.
One was the column I wrote about memory gardens—those wonderful places where heritage plants are preserved. I received so many notes from you about special plants that remind you of family that we had to reprint your replies for several weeks in a row.
Another was about my trip to Cass County, Mo.—the discovery of family graves, and the making of new friends.
And of course, you know of my passion for preserving cemeteries! And no, I still have not received an answer about Battleground National Cemetery in Washington, DC. But, I am staying on the case—I promise.
Lastly, I remember how many of you contacted me following the column I wrote while sitting in a hospital room, waiting for my aunt to be transferred to hospice. It's amazing how many readers experienced a similar event—and how every note I received was filled with love of family.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your e-mails have made writing this column a joy—and I will truly miss hearing from you.
PS: If you want to stay in touch, and follow the continuing saga of me pestering the National Park Service, send me an e-mail and I'll update you as I learn more.
