Where to find New Jersey census records, immigration records, land records, maps, vital records and more.
RECORD HIGHLIGHTS

Mug books -- so named because of the photos that accompanied biographies of those who subscribed to the publication -- were popular in the late 19th century, and New Jersey has many at state and county repositories. Mug books should always be used with caution. Because people paid to be included, the facts are sometimes suspiciously complete, with maiden names for all the females and complete dates of events. They can be great places to begin, but remember, they usually only include prosperous members of the community.

New Jersey took state censuses decennially from 1855 to 1915, times conveniently between federal censuses. Like early federal census records, the 1855 and 1865 censuses only name the head of household, with all others enumerated by gender. In addition, some counties are missing in the 1855 and 1865 censuses, and enumerations of other counties are partial. The 1875 census only has two counties that survived, Sussex and Essex. All counties' records are available for the 1885, 1895, 1905 and 1915 censuses. Considering the destruction of the 1890 federal census, the 1885 and 1895 state censuses -- which name everyone in the household -- are a blessing. State census records are available on microfilm through the Family History Library (FHL); the 1895 count is on subscription site Ancestry.com.

Land sales before 1785 were recorded in the capitals of East and West Jersey -- Perth Amboy and Burlington, respectively. In 1795, records were transferred to Trenton; look into the Secretary of State's Deeds. Mortgages can be found in county court records from 1766; and other deeds, from 1785. Proprietary records, the first distribution of land by the proprietors, were handled differently. Some have been published; others are available on microfilm or in transcriptions of land surveys. The records were kept separately by individual boards of proprietors for East and West Jersey.

New Jersey required statewide registration of births and deaths beginning in 1848, though it wasn't until 1920 that county clerks recorded them consistently. The state archives has microfilm of birth certificates from 1878 to 1900, as well as birth registers. The FHL has only the registers. You can get birth and death records for the years 1901 to 1940 from the state archives. Death returns from May 1, 1848 to May 31, 1878 are on microfilm at the New Jersey State Archives, 225 West State Street, Box 307, Trenton, NJ 08625, http://www.state.nj.us/state/darm/links/archives.html, as well as from the FHL.

Provincial marriage records were supposed to begin in 1673, though they are incomplete in the early years. Marriage licenses or publishing banns for three weeks was required from 1719 until 1795, when the marriage license requirement was eliminated. After 1795, marriage certificates were moved to the county courts of common pleas. Unfortunately, these records seldom mention the couples' parents' names, but the good news is that you can access the marriages from 1795 to 1900 on microfilm through the FHL and its branch Family History Centers.
