Online Canadian Vital Records
9/28/2009
You've got questions about discovering, preserving and celebrating your family history; our experts have the answers.
Q. Are there online records of Canadian deaths and births? I have a lot of grandparents from Ontario.

A: An excellent, free resource for Ontario birth and death records is The Olive Tree Genealogy: Canada Births, Deaths and Marriages Exchange olivetreegenealogy.com/can/bdm. You can search this site for records alphabetically or view registrations by year. Although the Canadian government hasn't posted birth and death records, you can find other Ontario-related records (such as the 1871 census) at the Canadian national archives' ArchiviaNet www.archives.ca/02/0201_e.html. And this article from the Global Gazette provides valuable information on the microfilm records available through the Archives of Ontario: globalgenealogy.com/globalgazette/gazfd/gazfd71i.htm.
