• Chimney Rock National Historic Site

One of the most recognizable landmarks on the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, Chimney Rock stands more than 325 feet tall. Today, you can tour the site’s interactive visitor center, which features museum exhibits and a hands-on activity to “pack your wagon.”

• Fort Robinson Museum

This historic site’s exhibits illustrate the fort’s role in the 1870s Red Cloud Agency and the WWII internment of German prisoners of war. If your ancestor was stationed at the fort, visit the museum’s library.

• Homestead National Monument of America

4 miles west of Beatrice on Highway 4 Beatrice, N E 68310 (402) 223-3514 <nps.gov/home> When the United States granted free land in the Homestead Act of 1862, Americans rushed west to grab a tract to call their own. The site commemorating this historic event sits on one of the first homesteads claimed. A new Heritage Center eventually will house a repository for microfilm of all 2 million homestead case files.

• Museum of Nebraska History

View exhibits on Cornhusker State history, including displays on Nebraska’s development from 1867 to 1916, Nebraskans in World War II, and items made in Nebraska.

• Stuhr Museum ofthe Prairie Pioneer

Glimpse Nebraska pioneer life from the 1840s to 1920s at this living history museum. Its 150,000 artifacts include 60 historic buildings, a reconstructed Pawnee earth lodge and an 1890s railroad town.

• Willa Cather State Historic Site

In the town that influenced the writings of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather, you can visit Cather’s childhood home, the circa 1888 Garber Bank, the 1897 Burlington Depot and the Pavelka Homestead.
