Researchers believe that archaeologists at Jamestown have discovered the remains of Capt. Bartholomew Gosnold while digging at the location of the 17th-century Virginia fort. Gosnold was second in command at the Colonial settlement and captain of the Godspeed, one of the ships that brought 108 Virginia Company settlers to Jamestown in 1607. A decorative staff and other ceremonial artifacts found with the skeleton indicate that the remains belong to a high-ranking official. The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities <www.apva.org> plans to test the skeleton's DNA for comparison with the DNA of Gosnold's descendants. The association began excavating the fort area in 1994.
