The free Ellis Island passenger search website has undergone a dramatic makeover. The old, early 2000s site has been replaced by a modern, slick-looking site with lots of graphics and photos.

EllisIsland.org now redirects to www.libertyellisfoundation.org, which combines the contents of the former Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty, Wall of Honor and Flag of Faces websites.

The site, in beta, also is adding new passenger records from the years 1925 through 1957. The previous site stopped at 1924, when immigration slowed due to restrictive quotas. About two-thirds of the later records are already searchable on the site, with the rest coming closer to the end of the year.

Registered users of the old EllisIsland.org will need to select a new password by clicking the login link in the top right corner and choosing Forgot Password, or you can opt to log in with Facebook.

You’ll find the passenger and ship records search under Ellis Island in the navigation menu (or at www.libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger>).

Here, you’ll see a basic search, with name search options below the search box.

The “last name as first” option is new (I think), and awesome

  1. All my Genealogy friends who had to create a new password on the New/Relaunched "beta" website have told me all their previous search/saved records are gone. Are you able to contact the webmaster, or whoever, and make them aware of this, and find out if those saved records can be restored. If not, there are going to be alot of angry folks who have spent endless hours searching and saving records.

  2. Good Lord, they’ve created a Monster!! Just received this:: " [Group] Allegheny Ancestry and Genealogy Trails: Arla Woodling, You can no longer go from the search on familysearch.org to the ellis island site, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JXHC-DJC it bring up ‘EROOR 404 PAGE NOT FOUND!’

  3. I opened a case with Ellis Island website Tech Support about the missing account/missing saved records and they basically brushed me off stating that this is a new site, so we have to start again.

There are no navigation buttons from the manifest images. The passenger search brings me to page 2 of the manifest and only offers me that page and the back of page 2. There is no way for me to get to page 1!

Also, it is no longer possible to get to the Special Inquiry section of the manifest.

Why didn’t they have a public beta in parallel with the existing site and solicit comments before turning this loose on the general public?? It’s obvious that no one involved in the redesign has ever tried to do real genealogy research using their new website.

  4. What a disaster!!! The site is totally un-Useable. They are single handedly setting back the genealogical community 20 years. And they claim they will limit the number of searches based on the level of membership. What the ?????? These records should be in the public domain, just as the pre-1940 US Census records. I propose a class action law suit against the Ellis Island Organization. This is a travesty!!!!!

Ellis Island Organization is clearly run by amateurs with no computing or information sciences background.
