The military collection includes

  • service records (Union and Confederate) for soldiers from more than 50 territories and states
  • Union pension index cards
  • some Union widows’ pension files
  • Navy survivors certificates
  • Army registers
  • court records of compensation to former owners of freed slaves in Washington, DC
  • Southern Claims Commission records
  • investigations into subversive activity
  • and other records
