- Our friend Denise Levenick, the Family Curator, is asking for applications for the annual Freeman Student Genealogy Grant. Student genealogists age 18 to 23 are eligible to apply for the $500 cash award and registration to the Southern California Genealogical Society Jamboree (June 5-7 in Burbank, Calif.). The Freeman grant honors Levenick’s late mother, Suzanne Winsor (Brown) Freeman. You’ll find an application and more details here. The deadline is April 10.
- FamilySearch reported that the fifth annual RootsTech 2015 conference, held last month in Salt Lake City, was the largest one yet with 23,918 attendees over three days (an 83 percent increase over 2014). Twenty sessions were broadcast live online to 128,000 viewers. To view select sessions from RootsTech 2015 online, go to the conference website.
You also can view sessions from the conference’s Family Discovery Day, held for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch is planning to deliver recorded RootsTech sessions at more than 1,000 local Family Discovery Day events during the rest of the year, held mostly at LDS church stakes.
- The New England Historic Genealogical Society has updated its quarterly journal with a new design and a broader editorial focus. The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, appearing this week in its 673rd issue, now features a full-color cover with a contents listing and a modernized interior design. The supplemental American Ancestors Journal will be integrated into the Register to give it a national and international scope, while still retaining an emphasis on New England, New York State, and out-migrations from New England.
- Saturday, March 28, the Civil War Trust will hold its 19th annual Park Day, when volunteers gather to clean up historic battlefield sites across the country. This is the first year the cleanup effort will include both Civil War and Revolutionary War sites. Details such as event times and registration procedures vary by the cleanup site.
