DNA: Your Genealogy Power Tool
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard about DNA testing and how it can open new doors in your research. Working with those results sounds complicated, especially if biology was never your favorite subject. But understanding your results and using them in your research doesn’t have to be difficult. That’s why our workshop demonstrates how to use DNA analysis tools to apply your results to real-life brick walls. You’ll get a solid understanding of the tools and skills needed to use your DNA successfully. Class starts March 26th.
Drill Down Into Your Results
They say a carpenter is only as good as her tools, so it’s important to make sure you have a good testing strategy in place. Chances are, you can’t test every family member, but you can test strategically to answer your questions. Craft a DNA research plan that takes into account the different types of tests available and the analysis tools from each company. In our week-long workshop, you’ll learn about the DNA analysis tools that AncestryDNA, Family Tree DNA, and MyHeritage DNA have to offer. Then, pair up your family members with the tests that will yield the best answers.
Fill Up Your Genetic Toolbox
While your testing company offers useful tools for using your results, there are other third-party websites that offer even more resources. Some allow a test taker from AncestryDNA compare results with someone who tested at another site, like GEDmatch. Other tools, like Promethease, will analyze your results and build reports about health and ancestry for a small fee.
Put Your DNA Analysis Skills to Practical Use
There’s an entire module of lessons in the workshop designed to help you build your DNA analysis skills. After all, a hammer isn’t much good without a nail. You can use triangulation and phasing to piece together new information and organization tools to pull it all together. While Gedmatch can do much of this for you, understanding how it works will help you build a solid foundation.
Become a Master Craftsman with our Virtual Conference, April 6-8th!
In our 2018 Spring Virtual Conference, we have a full track on DNA testing analysis, including presentations on MyHeritage DNA and Living DNA. There’s also a presentation that will help you understand the science behind genetic genealogy in layman’s terms. In addition, you’ll see how applying this tool in combination with tech tools and research methods will achieve better results. See the full lineup here.
