As we get closer to the holiday season, you might wonder what to get the genealogist in your life. Books always make a great gift, but which ones should you buy? We at Family Tree want to put together a list of the best genealogy books—but we need your help! We want to hear from you about what genealogy books are worth checking out. We’ve created a Goodreads list of the top genealogy books for researchers, and you can vote on titles or add your own. Our books editor, Andrew Koch, has added ten of his favorite titles to get us started.
A quick summary for those who haven’t used Goodreads before: Goodreads allows users to find and rate books they’ve read or want to read. With a free account, you can create your own digital bookshelves and post reviews of your favorite books online. Users can also create lists of books that others can view, vote on, and add to. To put it another way: Goodreads is like Yelp, but for books.
To vote, simply sign up for a free Goodreads account, then go to the Goodreads list and select books. You can either click the Vote For This Book button underneath a title already on the list, or add your own by clicking the Add Books To This List tab. You can add a book straight from one of your shelves or search by title, author or ISBN. Note: The list refreshes every five minutes, so it may take some time for your votes to appear.
