December 23 is the annual observance of National Roots Day in the US. This special genealogy holiday encourages us to look into our family history and ancestry. The holiday season makes collecting information about family much easier, as families are gathered together for their holiday festivities. If you’d like to participate in National Roots Day this year, we’ve got some ideas on how to make the most of it.

Interview a family member

Interviewing a family member can provide a great wealth of information to apply to your research. As everyone gathers together to celebrate the holidays, set aside 30 minutes with your wisest relative and bring a list of questions.  If you have children, this can be a fun way to get them involved in your genealogy research. Check out our tips for interviewing family members to ensure your time spent together is as productive as possible.

Be sure to take notes or record the interview, you’re going to want to keep track of the knowledge they share!

Create a family history book

National Roots Day is the perfect day to get started on your own family history book. This is a great way for you to keep track of your favorite ancestral discoveries, or can be given as a gift to your family members. To get started on your own, check out our premium article with all the information you need to make a book that will stay in your family for generations to come.

Be sure to share on social media

Sharing your family history findings on social media not only can help your family members learn the information you’ve acquired, but can also encourage others to dig into their ancestry as well. Be sure to use the hashtag  #NationalRootsDay on your post, so others participating in the big day can find your posts!

We hope you enjoy National Roots Day!
