Hacks and Shortcuts
Don’t go wild: The Research meta-search doesn’t let you search with wildcard characters because the sites it searches don’t support the same wildcards. The Genealogy Center search doesn’t support wildcards, either.

Experiment with punctuation: If the last name you’re searching for contains hyphens, apostrophes or other punctuation, try your Research search both with and without special characters.

To speed up searches: Tired of waiting for Research search results? If you have a fast computer, use the speed slider on the search results page to speed things up by allocating more of your computer’s processing power to the MyHeritage Research Java applet (which you must download the first time you run a search).

Understanding your Megadex results: You may wonder why the results for your Megadex search list multiple entries for each website. That’s because each spelling variant gets its own results link. So if you’re searching for five variations on a surname in 10 sites, you’ll see 50 results entries, each with the number of matches in that database for that spelling.

Adding a Megadex option: While the proprietary Megadex search tool suggests a huge range of spelling variants for your surname, your research may have turned up others. To add your own variants, use the “click here” link at the end of the introductory info about Megadex, above the checkmarks and suggested spellings. Type in up to 10 alternate spellings, and Megadex will let you—and other researchers—use them in its search.

Sorting results: A successful Research metasearch can generate a long list of results. To sort them by the name of the source, click on the Database column header; to sort by number of matches, click the Matches header. Clicking on the header again reverses the order, from Z to A or fewest to most matches.

Finding photos: You can search the 59 million member photos on MyHeritage from the Community section (under
Photos>Find Photos).
