Add social history to your family tree with the Best of History Matters e-Book.
Have you ever thought about aspects of modern life that we take for granted-and wondered what life was like before them?
Readers of Family Tree Magazine have always told us they yearn to learn more about their ancestors as living, breathing people, not just names on a pedigree chart. Naturally, part of that is understanding the world our forebears lived in: What did they wear, eat and do for fun? How did they go about the tasks of daily life? To help answer these questions, we launched the History Matters column in 2007 with the aim of highlighting “innovations and trends that shaped our ancestors’ lives.”
Over the years, contributing editor David A. Fryxell has written about the roots of everything from can openers to windmills, weather forecasting to rifles. In this e-book, we’ve chosen some of our favorites to share with you, divided into the following categories:
- Civic Engagement
- Food and Food Storage
- Health and Hygiene
- Society and Entertainment
- Technology and Inventions
