Contents of the Genealogy Brick Wall Busters eBook:

Part 1: Reviewing the Basics

  • Busted!: We expose the truth behind 10 genealogy falsehoods that could sabotage your family tree.

Part 2: Finding Missing Ancestors

  • Hiding in the Census: Censuses help you build the backbone of your family tree. Use our search strategies to overcome seven common reasons your ancestors might be hard to locate in the records.
  • Digging Deeper: Ancestors are hard to find before 1850—records get scarcer and censuses don’t name everyone. But you can do it! Follow these eight strategies for discovering your distant roots.
  • Moving Targets: Did your ancestors drop off the map? Maybe it’s not because they moved, but because boundaries shifted or street names changed. We’ll help you use old maps to solve place problems.

Part 3: Improving Your Searches

  • Search and Recover: Think your ancestors are a lost cause? Not with our 41 strategies for finding your family history online.
  • On Your Mark: Not getting the results you want on Ancestry.com? Our close look at the site’s search options will help you refocus those off-target searches to find your ancestors’ records.
  • Heritage Hacks: Are your genealogy finds too few and far between? Try these 18 tech tricks for freer, faster, more-effective family history research.

Part 4: Dealing with Names

  • Mistaken Identities: It’s easy to mix up your relative with someone else’s in old records. But you can avoid an ancestor identity crisis when you follow these seven strategies.
  • Speaking Their Language: The language barrier can really put a crimp in your German genealogy research. Get help tracing your Deutsch ancestors’ names and places with these online tools.

Part 5: Finding Birth Families, Orphans and Adoptees

  • Finding Birth Families with DNA: DNA testing has opened a broad new avenue for adopted people to find their birth families. Our guide maps out your journey of discovery.
  • Tracing Orphaned Ancestors: If Great-grandpa lost his parents as a child, how can you research his birth family? These records can help you find your orphaned ancestor’s family.

Part 6: Seeking Advanced Solutions

  • Triple Plays: Where do you fit in with your DNA matches? Triangulating a known relationship with unknown matches can reveal the answers. We’ll show you how to do it.
  • Go with the Pro: When you’ve taken your family history research as far as you can on your own, it may be time for expert help. Follow our five strategies for working with a professional genealogist.
