Excerpt: Sample Tips

Here are some tips you’ll find in The Family Tree Problem Solver eBook:

  1. Look at records in context. Records do not exist in a vacuum; they belong to a set of events and documents that need to be examined. Consider the time and place your ancestor lived in to uncover clues about what information could be hiding “between the lines” of your records.
  2. Research your ancestor’s network. Look for records of whole communities, rather than just individuals. Social relationships often followed your ancestors throughout their lives—including during migrations—and these can serve as valuable reference points, especially if you can’t find records of your direct-line ancestors.
  3. Rethink in-laws. Until modern times, it was assumed that spousal relatives became the same as your own. As a result, records might not distinguish between one’s “brother” and “brother-in-law.” Re-examine records that mention familial relationships, and consider who else they might refer to.
