Excerpt: Sample Tips

Here are some tips you'll find in How to Use Evernote for Genealogy:

1. Think outside the note. Evernote's known for its text notes, but that's just the beginning of what you can record in the program. Use Evernote's camera feature and its audio recording capabilities to preserve your family memories of all kinds. You can also upload PDFs to Evernote and tag them, and users with a paid Plus or Premium subscription can even annotate PDFs and import e-mails.

2. Don't go tag wild. Evernote has a useful tagging feature that allows you to easily comb through your notes for information related to a particular phrase. While it can be tempting to tag every possible word associated with your note, use only the most relevant tags when filing your notes. Evernote will already search the words within a note's text, so avoid tagging notes with words already there. Instead, use tagging to cross-reference notes and group them together.

3. Lock down your data. You might start using Evernote for genealogy, but there's a good chance you'll end up incorporating the program into other areas of your life that have more sensitive data. While your great-grandfather's baptism certificate isn't likely to attract the attention of hackers and thieves, your tax information from last spring might. Be sure to use Evernote's security features, including double password protection, to keep that information safe and secure.

4. Sync across your devices. You'll be hard-pressed to find an Internet-ready device that Evernote doesn't work on. Make the most of Evernote's versatility by downloading the app on all of your devices. This will give you access to your data wherever you go. For those concerned about preserving their cell phone data, adjust your preferences in Evernote to only sync when your device is connected to Wi-Fi.
