Get in touch with your Polish family tree with this extensive, in-depth genealogy class. These four lessons will teach you everything you need to know about your Polish roots.

Lesson 1: Script and Typeface

The Family Tree University Polish Genealogy 101 course introduced you to some of the languages genealogists need to be able to read to effectively research records from Poland's three partitions. Now it's time to hone and practice these skills so you'll be able transcribe and translate a great number of these records.
A. Translating common Polish record "templates"
B. Latin
C. German
D. Russian (Cyrillic)
E. Working with Jewish Records
F. Exercise

Lesson 2: Maps and Gazetteers.

Orienting yourself to the geographic area of research is always essential to genealogy, but probably even more so for those with Polish ancestors because of Poland's long and complex history and shifting borders. Let's examine some tools to identify villages and to which part or parts of Poland they historically belonged.
A. Poland's complicated history and shifting borders
B. Eastern Europe maps and atlases
C. Gazetteers
D. Partition-Specific Resources
I. Austrian
II. Prussian
III. Russian
E. Exercise

Lesson 3: Research Strategies—FHL and Beyond

Before you jump across the pond or spend money to acquire records tucked away in Poland's archives, you should consult the Family History Library in Salt Lake and its large collection of microfilmed records, computer databases and books. In addition there are other online Polish records that can be searched via archival and specialized databases.
A. Using the resources of the Family History Library system
B. Online Polish Records
C. Researching in Poland
D. Overcoming Research Roadblocks
D. Quiz

Lesson 4: Poles Outside of Poland

When it comes to "Polish" research, genealogists often find that their "Polish" ancestors didn't just settle in enclaves in North America (USA and Canada) but that during the 1800s and again after the post-war (WW1 and WW2) years, many Poles found new homes in other areas of Europe or South America. This lesson will look a bit closer at Polish migration and its impact on genealogical research.
A. North American Settlements
I. USA
II. Canada
B. South America
C. Australia and New Zealand
D. Europe
E. Eastern Europe
F. Quiz
