You'll love this if...

  • You have fragile old photographs you want to preserve in an archival-safe manner
  • You want to organize and safely store more-recent prints, negatives or transparencies
  • You currently have photos stored in non-archival albums or boxes
  • You need a way to back up digital photos and scanned old pictures
  • You're seeking an affordable alternative to buying large quantities of archival supplies

Family photos are among the most precious genealogical treasures—yet you probably have old family photos stuffed in shoeboxes or stored in those "magnetic albums" with the sticky pages. (Who doesn't?)

Take action now to make sure those memories last for generations to come! The Photo Preservation Kit is an all-in-one solution to archive your family pictures, old and new, print and digital.

This kit is part of our exclusive Family Archivist line of archival kits designed especially for genealogists. Family Tree Magazine's experts have handpicked the right tools for the job, so you can spend less time researching archival products and more time researching your genealogy.

Family Archivist Kits feature:

  • archival-safe products from Gaylord, a trusted supplier to archivists and librarians
  • step-by-step instructions to make completing your archiving project easy, delivered as a downloadable PDF and written by Family Tree Magazine's Family Archivist columnist Sunny Jane Morton

Family Archivist kits save you money, too! Most archival supplies are sold in large quantities. Purchased separately, the items in this Photo Preservation Kit would cost more than $125. With the kit, you get only the quantities you need—and avoid paying for extra items you don't.

The Photo Preservation Kit contains all the supplies you need to safely archive 50 physical photographs and hundreds of digital images, including:

5x7 Flip-Top Photo Box

This tan storage box is designed to store photos safely, having passed the Photo Activity Test (PAT) for archival quality. Its flip-top lid allows easy access to contents, and reinforced metal edges help the box maintain its original shape after years of use.

Specifications:

  • acid-free; lignin-free
  • pH 8.0 - 9.0
  • 40-pt. barrier board
  • tan
  • unbuffered

Polypropylene Sleeves

  • 25 4x6-inch sleeves
  • 25 5x7-inch sleeves

Insert your photos, negatives or transparencies into these archival-safe plastic sleeves to protect them from fingerprints, soils, pollutants and the stress of handling. The 4x6-inch sleeves fit standard-size modern prints and smaller photos; 5x7 sleeves are large enough to hold many cabinet cards from the 19th century.

Unbuffered Negative/Print Storage Envelopes

  • 40 white envelopes

Use these envelopes to organize groups of photographs; you can insert photos with or without the included polypropylene sleeves. Label with the stabilo pencil also included in the kit.

Specifications:

  • acid-free; lignin-free
  • pH 8.0 - 9.0
  • 40-pt. barrier board
  • tan
  • unbuffered

Archival Gold CD in Polypropylene Case

Store scanned photos and digital pictures on this special archival CD-R, which features a stable, inert and reflective gold layer plus a protective Scratch Armor layer to guard against scratches, scuffs, dirt and fingerprints.

How it works: Digital information is stored on CD-Rs in pits that have been burned into the dye layer by a CD burner. The patented phthalocyanine dye layer found in the Archival Gold CD-R reacts to the writing laser faster than the dye layer found in traditional CD-Rs, making it easier for CD drives to read it.

Specifications:

  • 700MB/80 minutes capacity
  • 52x speed

Stabilo Black Pencil

Although you should never write on the front of a photograph, a stabilo pencil is a safe way to label the back of a print and write on storage envelopes. This water-soluble pencil features a soft, waxy lead that makes clear, dense, legible marks on paper, glass, metal, photos and film. Pencil lead wipes off smooth surfaces with a damp cloth and is easily erased from paper.

Pigma Identi-Pen (black)

You'll need an archival-safe solution for labeling folders and your Archival Gold CD, as well as making notes on preservation copies or printouts. This pen contains alcohol-based ink with no harsh solvents and writes on virtually any surface, including film, glass, metal, rubber, foil and resin-coated papers. Permanent on most surfaces, the ink can be removed from solid, non-porous surfaces with a solvent such as alcohol. Contains a fine-point marker on one end and an extra-fine plastic tip on the other.

Disposable Cotton Gloves

Keep fingerprints off your documents and protect fragile paper with this pair of disposable cotton gloves. The lightweight, unhemmed, cotton knit will stretch to fit most hands; simply discard when soiled.
