You'll Love This If:

  • You want to learn how to decode old handwriting
  • You want to learn what handwriting can reveal about your ancestor
  • You want to understand old symbols, patterns and characters within genealogy records

Presenter: D. Joshua Taylor
Duration: 60 minutes

In genealogy we encounter many handwritten materials, from deeds to personal family letters and diaries. Understanding and reading those records can often solve family riddles, but deciphering the words behind fancy flourishes and swooping script can be a pain. You may never become totally fluent in a particular style of handwriting, but you can learn enough to discover data and reveal names. In this hour-long webinar from D. Joshua Taylor, you'll learn how to draw important info out of hard-to-read handwriting.

What You'll Learn:

  • What you can learn from guidebooks and samples (from Colonial American to German Gothic).
  • How to understand context and symbols within documents.
  • What can be discovered from getting to know your clerk (patterns, symbols, etc.).
  • How to build your own personal decoding guide.
  • How to use social media as a decoder (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  • What other helpful resources you can use (abstracts, transcriptions, etc.)
