Google Earth for Genealogists Online Course

Visit Your Ancestral Homes Virtually

Most of us never get to travel to all the places our ancestors lived, but you can follow in their footsteps - at least online. Google Earth, a free software program, lets you experience faraway locations from the comfort of your own home. In this 4-week course, you'll tap into the program's robust features to bring depth and a new perspective to your family history research.

By the end of the workshop, you'll be using Google Earth to not only see where your ancestor lived, but you'll also use Google Earth to understand the historical events your ancestors lived through and incorporate their places into your research.

Course runs from January 21 - February 17, 2019

Travel in your ancestor’s footsteps without leaving home!

In this 4-week online genealogy course, you’ll learn how to use this handy software in your genealogy to pinpoint the starting location of your immigrant ancestors as well as experience faraway locations, so you can see the places where your ancestors lived. You'll get several video demonstrations and hands-on exercises so you can start putting what you've learned into practice with your own family history and see results from the start.

You’ll love this course if:

  • You want to see what your ancestor’s home town looks like
  • You want tools to understand the journey your immigrant ancestors took
  • You want to incorporate more maps and geography into your genealogy research
  • You want a great mapping software that allows you to create overlays and customized views.

This online course contains four lessons in written and video form. You’ll have plenty of exercises to try throughout so you can put what you’ve learned into practice and Lisa will be on hand to answer questions and offer feedback in the discussion boards for each lesson.

”Very appreciative of how quickly Lisa responded to a slight problem I was having with an exercise. Clear suggestions for me and I appreciated the attachment she sent.” - Elaine F.

In this course, you’ll learn:

  • How to save, share and organize information in Google Earth
  • How to overlay historical maps
  • How to plot your ancestor's homestead
  • How to create a virtual "family history tour" to share with others

”This course was so full of information, I printed all lessons and downloaded all videos so I can use it as a reference.” - Marianne B.
