Top Tips: Adoption and DNA

In this episode DNA expert and dear friend Diahan Southard joins me to talk about one of the hottest topics of the year: DNA and specifically, DNA and adoption research. In her article Finding Your Birth Family with DNA (Dec. 2017 issue of Family Tree Magazine), Diahan covers how genealogists can use DNA to help shed light on the family trees of adoptees.

Diahan’s process:

  1. Take an autosomal test and transfer to the results to as many companies as possible.
  2. Look for a 2nd cousin or closer match
  3. Turn to family trees – check the appropriate generation for common ancestor candidates
  4. Use triangulation to narrow down the candidates to one set of shared ancestors
  5. Research the descendants of this ancestral couple to identify individuals who were in the right place at the right time

Amy’s Top Tips:

  1. Decide what you’re looking for before you start searching; it will help you stay focused and create better searches.
  2. Play around with any website or database; don’t just enter one search. Play around to see how the searches work. Does entering more information give you more results or fewer results
  3. There is an advantage to searching in just one database rather than an entire website (such as Ancestry or FamilySearch.)
