If you’ve ever tried to locate the tiny French hamlet (or was it in Switzerland?) whence your immigrant ancestor came, you know the meaning of frustration.

Progeny Software hopes its World Place Finder CD-ROM will keep you from pulling your hair out. The database contains more than 3.3 million place names from around the world, and you can have it for the $6 shipping and handling charge.

You can search World Place Finder by entering the name of a town, city, county or country anywhere in the world — or a church or cemetery in the United States (be sure to check spelling variations). You’ll get a list of matches including the longitude and latitude for each place. Then you can use your records to find your ancestor’s home.

Progeny is using this free CD offer to market its recently released World Place Advisor software — a demo version is included on the free CD. World Place Finder uses the same database as World Place Advisor. The S34.95 Advisor software takes things a step further by searching your genealogy records for misspellings and incomplete place names, and suggesting corrections.

World Place Finder requires Windows 95 or higher and 64MB RAM. Visit <www.progenysoftware.com/placefinder.html> to order the free CD.
